After a general slow down in American Silver Eagle sales experienced last month, this month the United States Mint recorded the highest monthly sales for the one ounce silver bullion coins since 1986.
The monthly sales total for May was 3,636,500. This edged out the strongest month this year in January, when 3,592,500 coins were sold. The amount just missed surpassing the highest monthly sales total ever. Back in December 1986, only the second month the silver bullion coins were available, the US Mint had recorded sales of 3,696,000 coins.
After five months, the US Mint has sold 15,167,500 ounces of silver for the year to date. This remains on pace to break last year’s record annual sales total of 28,766,500.
Demand for the 2010 Silver Eagles doesn’t show any signs of slowing down, but supply issues will continue to be a determining factor on sales levels. The US Mint continues to ration the available supply to authorized purchasers. Additionally, they plan to launch a new series of America the Beautiful 5 ounce silver bullion coins in “mid-summer.” The demand from this new program, if significant, may put further stress on the supply of precious metals available for American Silver Eagle program.
